The backbone of English colonial defense, the English Militia were ordinary settlers, planters, and tradesmen called to arms when raiders threatened their communities. Poorly trained compared to regular soldiers but fighting for their homes and livelihoods, these men could be surprisingly tenacious when their backs were against the wall.
