The Militie were the Dutch colonial militia — armed settlers and tradesmen who defended Dutch Caribbean settlements against raiders and rival European powers. Though not professional soldiers, these men were organized, disciplined, and motivated to protect their communities and the lucrative trade interests of the Dutch West India Company.
